New Dog (again)

So, we thought it best to get a 2nd dog, to keep Doogie company during the day. We visited the local animal shelter a couple of times. We opted not to bring home the "foo-foo" dog we saw on the first visit. We did, however, eventually find Smudge. At the time of this writing, his name is still Smudge, but it's up deliberation. When we first saw Smudge, he was really dirty, a little ugly, but really happy to see us. He didn't shed and he was available. Then, we brought the kids. They thought he was cute. But they think any dog is cute. Especially when there's a possibility it's coming home with us.

We submitted an application for Smudge's adoption, and were told the process takes a few days. They later called and asked that we bring Doogie in to meet Smudge. Bayan and the girls drove Doogie to the shelter, and the dogs got along great. Eventually, we got the call that Smudge was ours, and they would start the process (shots, general exam, neuter).

We've now had Smudge for 2 days. He's still dirty and he's still ugly. We just can't do anything about it until he's healed from the surgery. He has an appointment with a Vet tomorrow, so we'll see what our options are. I can't pet him yet. I wish they would have asked if I wanted him groomed first. I would have gladly brought him there and paid for it before he got neutered. Now I'm stuck.

He and Doogie are getting along (kind of). Doogie looks to me for help and his ears hang down low when he's had enough of Smudge. I can't really tell yet if Smudge is just REALLY excited to play with Doogie, or if he's trying to be dominant over him. I just keep reading advise online and follow what makes sense. Smudge sleeps in a crate at night, and stays in it during the day. When we're home, he's out of the crate but on a leash. I come home at lunch to walk them now.

Bayan and I both wonder why we wanted 2 dogs. It was a good idea at the time. We might just be going through that new, newborn stage when you're not sure how you're going to make it through.

We see Smudge's potential, though, to be cute and fun (and clean). Once we take that cone collar off, and he's all healed up, cleaned and groomed, we'll know for sure.

Updates to follow...
